What Are These Things?

An eyepiece is the small tube you look through on a telescope. Your scope gathers light. The eyepiece turns that light into a picture your eye can use. Swap the eyepiece and you change the power and the view. That is the whole eyepiece role in one sentence.

Explore Scientific is a US brand based in Springdale, Arkansas. They sell eyepieces in seven main lines. Each line is named for how wide the view looks: 52°, 62°, 68°, 82°, 92°, 100° and 120°. In April 2026 the brand added two brand-new lines built around ED glass: the 72° ED and the 92° ED.

Who Am I?

I run a small backyard observatory in a Bortle 6 suburb. I have owned 31 eyepieces over 14 years. Nine of them were Explore Scientific. I have logged just over 400 hours at the eyepiece with this brand, most of it on an 8-inch f/6 Dob and a 4-inch f/7 refractor. I am not paid by Explore Scientific. I bought every unit in this review with my own money, apart from one loaner 92° ED 14mm that went back in June.

How Long I Tested

I started with the 82° set in 2019. The 62° units joined in 2022. The new ED glass arrived in my hands on 2 December 2025 as a pre-release loaner, and I bought my own 92° ED 14mm in May 2026. So this review covers eight months of nights with the new ED line and six years with the older lines.

2. The Lineup, Specs and Prices

Opening the Box

There is no fancy unboxing here, and I like that. Each eyepiece comes in a plain black card box. Inside you get the eyepiece in a soft foam nest, two dust caps, a small cloth bag and a folded spec card. No case. No cleaning kit. No stickers.

The first thing you notice is the weight. My 92° ED 14mm landed in my palm like a hockey puck made of lead. The second thing is the smell of fresh rubber from the eyecup. Both are good signs.

Who Should Buy These

The 62° and 68° lines are for people upgrading from the kit eyepieces that came with the scope. The 82° line is for people who want a wide view without paying Tele Vue money. The new ED lines are for people who own a fast f/4 or f/5 scope and want the stars at the edge to stay round.

3. Design and Build Quality

How They Look and Feel

These are not pretty in the way a Tele Vue is pretty. They are plain black with a green ring and white print. Blocky. Serious. The rubber grip band around the middle is wide and grippy, which matters at 2 a.m. when your fingers are numb.

My 82° 14mm has been dropped twice onto grass and once onto a wooden deck. The paint has one chip. The optics never shifted.

What They Are Made Of

The bodies are machined metal, not molded plastic. Every inside surface of the barrel is flat black. The edges of each lens are blackened too. That kills stray light bouncing around inside the tube, which is why the sky background looks so dark.

The Argon Trick, Explained Simply

Most sealed eyepieces are filled with nitrogen gas. Explore Scientific uses argon instead. Argon atoms are bigger than nitrogen atoms by 0.13 angstroms, with 11.2 cubic centimeters more volume per molecule. Bigger atoms leak out slower. Argon is more inert too, so it will not react with the glue or the metal inside. It even cools slower than nitrogen, which softens the shock when you carry a warm eyepiece into cold night air.

Comfort at the Eye

Eye relief is the gap between your eye and the glass where the full view snaps into place. Sit too close or too far and you get a black ring or a floating shadow. If you wear glasses at the scope, you need 18 mm or more to see the whole field.

This is where the older lines trip up. The 62° 14mm gives only 10.5 mm of eye relief. I cannot use it with glasses. The 62° 32mm and 40mm give 22 mm and 28 mm, which is roomy. The 82° 14mm sits at 15.6 mm, which is fine for me without glasses but tight with them. The new ED units are the fix. Explore Scientific built the whole 92° ED line around long eye relief, and forum watchers pegged it near 20 mm before the specs went public.

Will They Last?

Six years in, my 82° units still turn smoothly, still seal, and still show zero fungus or dew inside. The twist-up eyecups on the newer LER units feel firmer than the old fold-down rubber ones, which used to sag after a few winters.

One warning. The soft rubber eyecups on the 68° line are removable, and they will fall off in tall grass. Mine did. Twice. Mark them with white paint pen.

4. Performance Analysis of Explore Scientific ED Eyepieces

4.1 Core Job: Sharpness Across the Field

The main job of any wide eyepiece is to keep stars round from the middle to the edge. Cheap wide eyepieces turn edge stars into little seagulls. That is called coma and astigmatism.

My test target was the Double Cluster in Perseus at f/6. I counted how far out from center the stars stayed as tight points.

The gap between the 92° ED and my old 82° is small in the middle. At the edge it is not small at all. The ED glass holds stars tight where the 82° starts to smear.

4.2 The Three Things I Scored

Contrast on Faint Fuzzies

Contrast is how well a faint smudge stands out from the black sky behind it. I used the Veil Nebula with an OIII filter on eight clear nights. The 92° ED showed the braided texture in the Eastern Veil that my 82° only hinted at. On the Ring Nebula, the ED unit let me hold the central hole at 150x where the 82° needed 190x.

Planets

People often ask what eyepiece for planets works best. Short answer: a short focal length with good glass and enough eye relief to stay comfortable. For my 8-inch, the sweet spot is 6mm to 9mm.

On Jupiter in March 2026 I ran the 82° 6.7mm against the 92° ED 9mm with a 2x extender. Both showed the two main cloud belts and the Great Red Spot. The ED unit showed less color fringe on the limb. That fringe is chromatic aberration, and killing it is the whole point of ED glass.

An Explore Scientific 3mm eyepiece review will tell you the same thing I found: 3mm is too much power for most nights. On my scope, 3mm means 400x. I got a usable view maybe four times in six years. Skip it unless you own a big scope and live somewhere with steady air.

5. Using Them Night to Night

Getting Started

There is no setup. Pull the cap, slide it in the focuser, tighten the screw. That is it. The 1.25″ units drop into any standard focuser. The 2″ units need a 2″ focuser or a diagonal that takes 2″ barrels.

One tip that saved me money: check your focuser can hold the weight before you buy a 2″ unit. My first 2″ eyepiece made a cheap plastic focuser sag by two millimeters, which threw off focus every time I moved the scope.

Day to Day

The 62° and 82° 1.25″ units are light enough to carry in a coat pocket. The 2″ units are not. My 92° ED 14mm shifted the balance of my Dob so much that I had to add a counterweight to the tube. If you own a Dobsonian, budget for magnetic weights.

Balance aside, these are easy to live with. The parfocal design on the 68° line is a small gift. Swap from the 16mm to the 24mm and the focus barely moves. You nudge the knob a quarter turn and you are back.

Learning Curve

Almost none. If you have used any eyepiece, you can use these. The one habit to build is eye placement. Wide eyepieces punish a lazy eye position. Sit slightly off and you get a black crescent, which people call a kidney bean. Rest your brow bone on the eyecup and it goes away.

Controls

There are no controls. There is one eyecup that folds down or twists up depending on the model. The twist-up cups on the LER units click into three stops, which lets you dial in the exact gap your eye wants.

6. How They Compare

Against the Big Names

The honest framing: Explore Scientific sits between the budget brands and Tele Vue. Tele Vue makes the Ethos, which shows 100° and costs around $850. The 92° ED shows 92° and costs $449.99. You give up eight degrees and save about $400.

Tele Vue Ethos / Delos — Better edge correction at f/4. Lighter for the field they show. Better resale. But you pay roughly double. For an f/6 scope or slower, most people will not see the gap in a blind test. For f/4, Tele Vue still wins.

Apertura Panorama 82° — A newer rival at a similar price. Very close on sharpness. The Explore Scientific units have the argon seal and the deeper focal length range, with 11 sizes in the 82° line against a handful in the Panorama set.

Celestron Luminos 82° — Cheaper, and it shows. The Luminos throws more glare around bright stars and softens sooner at the edge. Build quality on the Explore Scientific units feels a class above.

The 25mm and 10mm that came free with your scope — No contest. Those are 50° Plossls with tiny eye lenses. Moving to a 68° unit is the single biggest jump most beginners will feel.

Cost per degree is a rough guide only. It says nothing about glass quality. The 82° 14mm at $1.70 remains the sweet spot in the whole range.

7. What I Liked and What Annoyed Me

What Worked

  • Edge sharpness on the ED units. 96% of the field stayed clean on my f/6. That is Tele Vue territory.
  • The seal really works. Six winters, zero internal dew, zero fungus.
  • Deep focal length range. You can build a full set inside one line and keep the same view width at every power.
  • Dark sky background. Blackened lens edges pay off on faint targets.
  • Grip band. Small thing. Huge when your hands are cold.
  • Price ladder. $79 gets you in. $449.99 gets you near the top. Same brand, same feel.

What Needs Work

  • Weight. The old 92° 17mm weighs 47 oz. That is nearly three pounds hanging off your focuser.
  • Eye relief on some older units. The 62° 14mm at 10.5 mm is too tight for glasses wearers.
  • Stock. The new ED units have been “sold out” more often than in stock since April 2026.
  • Warranty changed. The old lifetime registration is gone. New units carry a limited warranty instead.
  • No case included. At $449.99 a foam case should be in the box.
  • Pincushion on the 68° line. Pan across the Moon and the edge bows a little. Some people never notice. I do.

8. What Changed in 2026

The New ED Lines

April 2026 was the big shift. Explore Scientific quietly listed two new families: the 72° ED in a 1.25″ barrel at $299.99, and the 92° ED in a 2″ barrel at $449.99. Four focal lengths landed in the 92° ED set: 9mm, 14mm, 20mm and 25mm. Eight are planned for the 72° ED.

Forum regulars spotted it before the press release. One thread on Cloudy Nights called it “a surprise for 2026.” The read from long-time watchers is that the 92° ED replaces the older 100° line, which had a reputation for weight and glare from its concave eye lens.

A Note on the ED Label

ED stands for extra-low dispersion. It is a type of glass that keeps colors from splitting apart as light passes through. Less splitting means less color fringe on bright objects and better contrast.

Be careful with marketing here. People search for Explore Scientific ED APO and mix two ideas. ED glass is a material. APO, short for apochromat, is a design goal: three colors landing at the same focus point. As Max Coe pointed out in that April 2026 thread, you can build an apochromat with no ED glass at all. ED glass just makes the job easier and the tube shorter.

Long-Term Note, July 2026

My oldest unit is the 82° 24mm, bought in June 2019. Seven summers, four house moves, one drop. The rubber grip has gone slightly shiny. The optics are as clean as day one.
