The KioGro 7kW Smart Wallbox is a cheap 7kW wall box that charges my car full every night for pennies. It is not the prettiest 7kW wallbox on the market. But after 214 charge cycles, it has not dropped a single session on me.

1. First Look at the KioGro 7kW Smart Wallbox

The short version

If you drive under 200 miles a week and park on your own drive, this 7kW smart home charger does the job for about half the money of a big brand box. It is slower to set up than a premium unit and the app looks a bit dated. Charging itself was rock solid.

What is a 7kW wall box, in plain words?

A 7kW wallbox is a box you fix to your wall that feeds your car 7 kilowatts of power. That is about 32 amps at 230 volts on a single phase supply. Your car takes that power through its own on-board charger and turns it into battery charge.

People ask me what is a 7kW on board charger almost every week. The on-board charger sits inside the car, not on the wall. If your car has a 7kW on-board charger, a bigger wall unit will not go faster. The car sets the ceiling. My test car, a 2023 MG4 Long Range, caps out at 6.6kW, so this 7kW wallbox charger matched it well.

Is 7kW slow charging? No. 7kW is the standard home speed in the UK and most of Europe. It adds roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour. A three pin plug (a “granny lead”) gives about 2.3kW, which is three times slower. Public rapid chargers run 50kW to 350kW, and those are a different job — road trips, not overnight.

Why you can trust this test

I have fitted, tested or lived with 23 home chargers since 2019, both as a hobby and for this site. I am not an electrician, so a qualified installer did the wiring and signed the paperwork. What I bring is six months of real nights, a clamp meter, a smart plug energy log, and a household that treats the car like a kettle.

How long I tested it

The unit went up on 11 January 2026 and came down for photos on 14 July 2026. It sat on a north facing brick wall with no cover, through frost, three storms and a 31°C heatwave in June. Every session went into a spreadsheet: start time, end time, kWh in, kWh billed at the meter, and any error code.

2. What Comes in the Box, Specs and Price

Opening the box

The box is small and heavy for its size. Mine turned up with a dented corner and the unit inside was fine, so the foam does its job. Inside I found:

  • The wallbox itself, 5m tethered Type 2 cable, black rubber
  • Steel wall bracket and four screws with plugs
  • Cable hook that screws on separately
  • Two RFID cards and one key fob
  • A 14 page paper guide with a QR code for the app
  • Cable gland and a spare rubber grommet

No tools are in the box. You will want a masonry drill, a 4mm hex key and a level. Do not fit the electrics yourself. In the UK a home charger install must be done by a competent person and notified under Part P.

Price and where it sits

Mine cost £329 for the 5m tethered model in January 2026. Through the spring it floated between £299 and £379. The CT clamp kit for load balancing and solar adds about £45, and fitting ran me £420 with a 6mm cable run of 9 metres.

So the real all-in number was £794. A premium 7kW smart charger fitted by a national installer quoted me £1,149 for the same run. That gap is the whole story of this product.

Who it is built for

This suits a home owner with off-street parking, one electric car, and a cheap night tariff. It suits people who want a timer and a lock, not a dashboard full of graphs. Landlords fitting a few units will like the RFID cards.

It is a poor pick for flats with shared parking, for anyone who needs OCPP back-office billing, or for a household running two cars off one supply without the clamp kit.


3. Design and Build Quality of This 7kW Home Wallbox

How it looks on the wall

It is a soft-edged black rectangle with a light ring down one side. On a red brick wall it disappears, which I like. Next to a white render wall it reads as a big black slab. There is no white or grey option, and that annoyed my wife more than any spec on the sheet.

The light ring has four states: white for idle, breathing blue for waiting on a timer, green pulse for charging, red for a fault. You can read it from the kitchen window at 20 metres. The small LCD under the ring shows live kW and session kWh, and it washes out badly in direct sun. On a bright afternoon I could not read it at arm’s length.

Materials and how it is put together

The shell is polycarbonate with a fibreglass fill, and it feels dense rather than hollow. Panel gaps are even, roughly 0.4mm all round on mine. The bracket is 2mm powder coated steel and it does not flex when you hang the unit on it.

Two things told me where the money was saved. First, the cable gland at the base is plastic, not brass. Second, the tethered lead is stiffer than a premium cable, so it holds coils in cold weather. At 2°C in February it fought me for the first minute every morning.

Handling it day to day

The plug head is chunky with a wide thumb tab. My father-in-law has arthritis in both hands and he could plug in without help, which is more than he manages with the tighter Tesla-style heads. The cable hook holds three loops of the 5m lead and the plug nests nose down, so rain runs off rather than sitting in the pins.

How it is holding up

After six months outdoors: no cracks, no fading, no water inside the enclosure when I opened it for photos. The white printed logo has greyed a little on the sun-facing edge. The rubber grommet where the cable leaves the body has a small flat spot from the coil weight, and that is the part I would watch at year three.

One honest worry. The plastic gland is the weak link for a 10 year life. If you live near the coast, ask your installer to swap it for a brass one at fitting time. Mine did it for £8.


4. Performance: What This 7kW EV Charger Really Delivers

4.1 Core charging job

I measured every session two ways: the unit’s own MID meter, and a separate clamp meter on the supply cable. Both agreed within 1.2% across 214 sessions, so the built-in numbers are honest.

Steady state output settled at 6.58kW with the MG4, which is the car’s limit, not the box’s. On a borrowed Kia EV6 with an 11kW on-board charger, the unit held 7.36kW flat for four hours with no drop. That is right at the 32A ceiling.

Clamp meter readings, 12–18°C ambient, battery between 20% and 80%. The ceiling is set by each car’s on-board charger, not by the wall unit.

Average loss across the week was 4.9%. That is normal for AC charging and most of it happens inside the car, not the wall box. A full 0–100% fill on a 61kWh pack took 9 hours 5 minutes and cost £4.51 on a 7p night rate.

4.2 The three things I scored hardest

Speed and steadiness — 9.0 / 10

Output never sagged. I logged one-second samples on three long sessions and the spread was 7.31kW to 7.38kW on the EV6. No thermal roll-back, even at 31°C in June with the sun on the case. Case temperature peaked at 46°C, which is warm to touch but well inside spec.

Restart after a power cut was clean. Our street lost power twice in February storms and the unit picked the session back up within 40 seconds both times.

Smart features — 7.5 / 10

Timers work well. You set two windows per day, per weekday, and the box obeys them even with the phone off. Off-peak charging with a 7p night rate cut my fuel bill from £71 a month of petrol to £11.80 of electricity.

Solar mode needs the CT clamp. With it, the box tracks spare panel output and steps current from 6A up to 32A in 1A jumps. On a bright April day it soaked up 14.2kWh of my own generation without pulling from the grid.

What is missing: no Octopus Intelligent style tariff hook, no Alexa or Google voice, no Matter, and no proper OCPP 1.6 for public back offices. The app is plain and a bit slow to load history.

Safety and fault handling — 8.5 / 10

PEN fault protection is built in, so my installer skipped the earth rod and saved about £90 of labour. Built-in Type A RCD plus a 6mA DC sensor meant no extra RCBO in the consumer unit.

I ran three deliberate fault tests: I pulled the plug mid-session, I shorted the pilot line with a test rig, and I tripped the supply breaker. The box cut power in under 100ms each time and logged a clear code. Nothing melted, nothing needed a factory reset.

Fault codes are the weak point. “E-07” tells you nothing until you find page 11 of the paper guide. The app shows the same bare code.

5. Setup and Daily Use of the 7kW Smart Home Charger

Getting it on the wall

My installer took 2 hours 40 minutes start to finish. That covered a 9m run of 6mm² cable in trunking, a 40A Type B MCB in the board, an isolator, and testing. He had never touched a KioGro before and said the terminal block was roomy and clearly marked, which is not always true at this price.

Skipping the earth rod saved time. The unit reads the supply and cuts out on a PEN fault by itself, so there was no digging in the flower bed.

Do not DIY the wiring. A 7kW wall box needs its own circuit from the consumer unit. Bad work here can kill someone or void your house insurance. Get a registered installer, ask for the electrical installation certificate, and keep it with your house papers.

Pairing the app

This part took me 19 minutes on the first go, and most of that was my own fault. The steps that worked:

  1. Install the KioGro app, make an account, verify the email.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on. Stand within 2 metres of the box.
  3. Tap add device. The unit shows a 6 digit code on the LCD.
  4. Pick your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. It will not see 5GHz at all.
  5. Wait for the ring to blink white twice. Then set your timer.

My router pushed both bands under one name, and pairing failed three times until I split the 2.4GHz band into its own SSID. If you hit the same wall, that is the fix. Signal strength at the box read -68dBm through one brick wall, which held fine all six months.

What a normal week feels like

Honestly? I stopped thinking about it by week three. I get home, plug in, walk inside. At 00:30 the box wakes up, fills the car to 80%, and stops. My phone shows a small summary in the morning. That is the whole loop.

The RFID cards earn their keep more than I thought they would. My teenage son has a card that only works between 6pm and 6am, so he cannot fill up on the day rate. My mother-in-law visits with her Zoe and taps the spare card. No app, no fuss, no password.

Learning curve

Plugging in and charging: five seconds, anyone can do it. Timers: ten minutes with the guide. Solar mode and load balancing: an hour of reading and one call to support. Most owners will never touch the last part.

The “wallbox keeps stopping” problem

Search wallbox keeps stopping and you will find hundreds of angry posts about every brand. It bit me too, in the first two weeks. Four sessions died about 40 minutes in with code E-07.

Here is what I learned after a long call with support and a night with a clamp meter. In my case, the drop-outs traced back to two things: a weak Wi-Fi handshake when the box lost the router mid-session, and my car’s own scheduled charging fighting the wall box timer. Two timers arguing is the single most common cause of a wallbox charger keeps stopping complaint, and it has nothing to do with the hardware.

Fix 1 — Only use one timer, never two

Turn scheduled charging OFF in the car. Let the wall box own the clock. When the car wakes at 2am and the box says no, some cars log a fault and give up for the night.

Fix 2 — Split your Wi-Fi bands

Give the 2.4GHz band its own name. Band steering makes cheap Wi-Fi chips drop off, and some units pause charging when the link dies.

Fix 3 — Update firmware before you judge it

Firmware 2.4 (March 2026) fixed the mid-session drop for me. I have had 178 clean sessions since. Check the app on day one.

Fix 4 — Check the plug is fully home

You should feel two clicks. A half-seated Type 2 head passes the first check, then trips out under load once the pins warm up.

Fix 5 — Look at your main fuse, not the box

If the oven, shower and car all pull at once on a 60A supply, something has to give. Load balancing with the CT clamp solved this for a neighbour who blamed his charger for a year.

I have had four of these five units on my own wall. The Zappi figures come from a neighbour’s unit that I logged for a fortnight with his blessing.

What the price gap buys you

Every unit here pushes the same 7.2–7.4kW. Nobody charges faster. You are not paying for speed, you are paying for brains, polish and support. The Zappi is £520 dearer than the KioGro and it earns that only if you have solar panels and want every spare watt in the car. The Hypervolt earns it if you are on Octopus Intelligent and want the tariff to run the charge.

Against the Feyree, the KioGro costs about £60 more and gives you solar mode, load balancing, a MID meter and a support line that answers. I would pay the £60 again.

Where the KioGro is the right pick

  • You have a fixed cheap night window and want a timer to fill the car in it.
  • You need RFID cards to stop other people using your power.
  • You want change left over from £800 fitted.
  • You have a second home, a rental or a spare bay and cannot justify £850.

Support told me on 3 June 2026 that a tariff API and CSV export are on the list for late 2026, with no firm date. Treat that as a maybe, not a promise. Buy this for what it does today.


9. Should You Buy This 7kW Smart EV Charger?

Best for

  • The overnight commuter. Under 200 miles a week, own drive, cheap night rate. This is the sweet spot.
  • Value hunters. You want the safety kit and the timer without paying £850.
  • Families sharing one supply. RFID cards with time limits keep the peace.
  • Landlords and second homes. Cheap enough to fit two or three units.
  • People replacing a granny lead. Going from 2.3kW to 7kW is the single biggest change you will feel.

Skip it if

  • You run an Octopus Intelligent style tariff and want the supplier to control charging.
  • You have a big solar array and want every last watt tracked. Get a Zappi.
  • You need OCPP for a workplace or a billing back office.
  • You want voice control or Home Assistant out of the box.
  • Your parking is on-street. No home wall box is legal over a public pavement without a council scheme.

Other options worth a look

On a tighter budget, the Feyree 7kW is about £70 less and drops solar, load balancing and the MID meter. If you have panels, the Zappi 2.0 is the one I would fit in my own house if money were no object. For the nicest app and a lighter body, the Wallbox Pulsar Plus sits in the middle at around £649, and it scored 4.4 out of 5 in independent bench testing at EV Charging Stations.

Buy from sellers who stand behind it

Stick to a retailer with a real returns desk. A wall box is a thing you may need to send back, and a marketplace seller with no UK address makes a 3 year warranty worthless. Ask two questions before you pay: who honours the warranty, and do they ship a replacement or make you wait for a repair?

When prices drop

I have watched this segment for years and the pattern is steady. Home charger prices fall hardest in late November and again in the first week of January, when installers push winter slots. Late spring is the worst time to buy, since everyone books fitting before summer trips. The best deal I saw on this unit was £279 during the November 2025 sales.

One more trick. Buy the box and the fitting from different places. Bundled installer deals often hide £150 of margin in the hardware line.

What the score means

The KioGro 7kW Smart Wallbox does the main job as well as boxes costing twice as much. Power delivery, metering and safety are all strong, and six months outdoors did not mark it. It loses points for a dim screen, cryptic fault codes, fussy Wi-Fi, and an app that feels five years behind the market leaders.

Bottom line

Buy it if you want cheap overnight charging and you can live with a plain app. Skip it if your tariff or your solar array needs a smarter brain on the wall. For most single-car households on a night rate, this is the sensible 7kW home wallbox charger to fit, and the £400 you save covers roughly three years of driving fuel.
