I tested with a clamp meter on the live feed and a separate energy meter at the board. Each run started with the car battery between 8% and 12% and stopped at 80%. Ambient temperature is noted in the tab panels below.

On the hottest day the unit shaved about 2% off power. That is heat management doing its job, and I would rather it did that than cook. Big‑brand units do the same thing.

Fitting it
This is a hard‑wired unit. It has a 1 m bare tail. You need a qualified electrician, and in the UK the job has to be notified under Part P. Do not try to wire this yourself. My fit took a sparky 2 hours 40 minutes, and it went like this:
- He checked my main fuse and load. My house has an 80 A main, so a 32 A circuit was fine.
- Ran 6 mm² SWA cable from the board to the garage wall, 11 m.
- Fitted a 40 A Type B breaker in the board. The wallbox has its own RCD inside, so no extra RCBO was needed.
- Marked the wall with the paper template, drilled four holes, fixed the bracket.
- Wired live, neutral, earth into the screw block, tightened the gland.

Living with it

UK smart charging rules from 2021 mean chargers sold for home use are meant to have smart features and to be able to respond to signals. A plain RFID box like mine sits outside the UK government grant schemes. If you want grant money, or your car can not schedule its own charging, pick a listed smart charger instead.

Six months in, the box is on the same wall doing the same job. Nothing has been swapped, cleaned out or repaired. The socket pins show light grey marking, the gasket is dry, and it still gives 7.28 kW. Solar panels go on my roof in September, so I plan to add a diverter‑capable charger on a second circuit and keep this one as the backup. I will add a 12‑month note here in February 2027 with the pin wear photos and any change in output.

What is Wallbox Power Boost?
Power Boost is a feature on chargers from the Spanish brand Wallbox. A clamp meter watches how much power the house is using, then the charger takes only what is spare. That keeps your main fuse from blowing. The WISSENERGY unit has no clamp input, so it has no equivalent. If your main fuse is small, this feature matters a lot.
Is a wallbox compatible with solar panels?
Some are, some are not. Chargers with solar diversion, like the myenergi Zappi or the Wallbox range with an energy meter, can send spare panel power to the car instead of the grid. This WISSENERGY unit can not do that. It charges at whatever current you set, from whatever source your house has. So the plain answer on solar compatibility here is no, not in any active sense.
Which wallbox charger should I choose?
Match it to your setup, not to the badge. No solar and a car that can time its own charging: a cheap 7.4 kW socket box like this one. Solar panels: a Zappi. Cheap night tariff and no smart car: an Ohme. Small main fuse: anything with a CT clamp. Company mileage claims: something that logs sessions.
Do I need a socket or a fixed cable version?
Socket units keep the wall tidy and let you pick your own cable length. You must fetch the cable from the boot each time. Fixed‑cable units are quicker to use, but the cable hangs on the wall and picks up grit. I went socket and would again.
